Tamarillo is also called “Japanese Plum”. It is very popular in the Andes of South America, where it is eaten with a spoon and with a bit of sugar and lime juice. Some even add its juice on chili peppers to prepare an excellent hot sauce.
It releases delicious, slightly acidic flavors.

How to buy

Tamarillo skin has to be very smooth and satiny. Its outline must be a regular oval and not more then 15 cm in length. The fruit must be intact and firm and react to slight pressure when held.

how to keep

Tamarillo can be kept in the fridge for a few days in a perforated plastic bag. It can also be frozen.

Tips

You can serve plain tamarillo, covered with lemon or lime juice. You can also adapt any recipe with tomatoes by replacing them with this fruit.
