Pomegranate comes from Central Asia and has been eaten since the Bronze Age. In Egypt, it was considered a symbol of ambition and prosperity, and it is still used today to dye Oriental carpets. Its color goes from green to orange-red, and the inside fruit for eating is made up of hundreds of delicious sweet and acidulous seeds.

How to buy

Pick heavy, large pomegranates. Avoid colored marks on the skin.

how to keep

Keep your pomegranates at room temperature for a few days or leave them in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. The seeds and the juice of pomegranate can be frozen.

Tips

To open a pomegranate, make a cut in its skin and remove its insides carefully. You have to be careful as the juice stains a lot. Only the seeds are edible. Sprinkle seeds on salads or desserts. Crush them to get a juice, which you can then use in sauces, jellies or even cocktails, like in the popular Tequila Sunrise.
